cartridges
weigh and how many cartridges to a case? >>

I'm not sure how Spencer cartridges were normally shipped. I have seen
boxes of 42 rounds, each containing six smaller boxes of seven rounds, which
matched the magazine capacity. I suspect, though, that the Ordnance
Department would have shipped ammunition to the field in larger cases.

Some approximation here, without looking up the exact specifications, but
based on the weight of the bullet, powder charge, and cartridge case, I'd
figure 12 rounds would run about a pound, give or take a bit. If shipped in
something like the 1,000 round cases typical of rifle musket ammo, then with
allowance for the case itself, which would be very sturdy wood, you're
probably taking something close to 90 pounds.
