Bruce and all - I would second the recommendation for Joe's books. He's
pretty much the official historian for the Blue & Gray division, and has himself
given many tours in Normandy. Dave Powell and I know him as a wargame
designer from way back, a career he has (unfortunately for us) slowed down on to
concentrate on writing - Dave's going through much the same thing these days.

In addition to the two books mentioned, his earlier "Beyond the Beachhead:
The 29th Division in Normandy" covers the 29th from it's formation through the
capture of St. Lo. Excellent reading, and my copy resided in the game box
to his "Omaha Beach' game, now out of print. It covers the same campaign -
Omaha to St. Lo.

Joe is also a huge ACW and Gettysburg fan - he was the original designer of
the Great Campaign's of the American Civil War series originally published by
Avalon Hill and now by Multi Man Publishing. He lived for several years in
what was originally the railroad station at Fairfield Station, up against
South Mt.

I remember Joe Balkoski's name from years back when I was playing, uh,
conflict simulations. I haven't read his 29th Division book, but it is somewhere
on the slopes of "Mount-to-be-read".
