Tom,
Eric Wittenberg has written about Richardson in GB Magazine, and we also
recount the story in our upcoming book "One Continuous Fight" on the
Gettysburg retreat (will be available June 1).
Seeing as how the spies would have been dressed like civilians, no one
likely took notice of them - the way Richardson gave himself away was by
poking around Buford's camp and asking too many questions. Buford got
suspicious, had him searched, and hung him when he found the Rebel passes
and a map of Federal positions.

>>Where can I read the details about the spy Richardson? Do not know if
there
is a connection, but the BMI's Sgt. Cline reported that he learned a
civilian had gone from Frederick to Hagerstown to alert the Rebels that the
Union army had arrived in the Frederick area.
