I don't recollect about the professor, but EP Alexander wrote that "It  was 
just 1 P.M. by my watch when the signal gun fired and the cannonade  opened."   
And Major Thomas Osborn, commanding the Union XI Corps  artillery, wrote: "At 
precisely one o'clock in the afternoon we saw a puff of  smoke from a gun 
fired from the hills upon our right and front ..."  A  number of other first-hand 
accounts to be found in Rich Rollins's "Pickett's  Charge!" cite the 1 PM 
time (but not all).
