Ray,
Most good sites are subscription based, and the best of them are
institution only subscriptions. But if you can find a local university
that will give you a community member's account, you should be able to
access them from the college's campus.
My favorites:
-newspaperarchive.com - This site is mildly incomplete, but will allow
you to search a great deal of newpapers from around the country. Their
Gettysburg papers offer a wide variety and selection, although they must
employ some relative dunces in their tagging department, as many of the
papers are listed under the wrong titles. (Some issues of 2004
Gettysburg Times listed as Gettysburg Gazette from 1808) But the scans
are decent and full-text searchable. (Private Memberships and
occasional institutions)
-harpweek.com - THE site for Harpers Weekly. This site has full text
searchable copies of the newspaper, and all of the engravings and images
that you see peppering the historical landscape. Harpweek has a sister
site, lincolnandthecivilwar.com, now known as "Illustrated Civil War
Newspapers & Magazines", which includes other Northern and Southern
periodicals, particularly searchable copies of Frank Leslie's, London
Illustrated News and Southern Illustrated News. (Institutional
Membership through Alexander Street Press)
-sonofthesouth.com - A free version of Harpers Weekly online, not as
easily searched, but categorized for easy browsing and discovery.

There are many more, but I'm pressed for time. Hope these make a good
jumping off point.
