<< Sorry for being late with this: For those who asked earlier about the
for sale signs at the George Spangler farm having been taken down, the
deal is now official. The Gettysburg Foundation closed on the purchase
of the farm on April 28th. The farm will be donated to the Park shortly,
and the NPS should make a public announcement sometime in May. Chalk one
up for the good guys!
Best regards,

Announced at the Friends banquet last Saturday, with the request that people

hold off discussing it on the Internet for a few days or a week, until all
the final documents were executed.

According to what I've heard, the Foundation had been negotiating for some
time to purchase a preservation easement. They kept running into
difficulties in coming to an agreement with the owners, however, and since
an easement can run to 80% of the market value of the property, the decision

was finally made to just go ahead and buy the property outright.

This is a particularly important event because I've been told that the Park
had earlier made it known that if the owners had chosen to sell the property

to developers - as they would have had every right to do - the NPS would
have not attempted to intervene.
