You may have forgotten that the first inigenous peoples' president of Mexico, Benito Juarez, had a hand in defeating Fance's ambitions in Mexico. A small victory by Mexican patriots at the town of Puebla is celebrated widely in the U.S. on Cinco de Mayo. The Mexicans really didn't need to wait for our civil war to end before they themselves kicked the French out.

The last thing Napoleon III wanted was a unified US turning its attention
outward and noticing his Mexican expedition.

Yes, the all in one basket concept behind the King Cotton method of
inducing
recognition from Britain seemed not only arrogant, but foolhardy as well.
When that failed, they had no other leverage to employ. In addition, it
antagonized a lot of people in Britain.
It also reflected British adaptability, since they changed from cotton to
the manufacture of other fabrics. They also turned to Egypt to supply
cotton to help keep that industry going as much as possible.
The French seemed a lot more anxious to recognize the South than the
British
were. The French motivation seemed to be gaining an inroad into Mexico.
