Hello,

I am a 17 year old who is currently writing a history of the Second Corps from its formations to the Battle of Gettysburg. I was wondering if publishing companies will publish books by someone at my age. I have given talks at Civil War Roundtables and I am self publishing my first book. One of my articles is being edited for publication in the Gettysburg Magazine. I am not yet finished but I have extensive unpublished sources that I have referenced. I talked to Michael Dreese and he said to talk to Mcfarland. They have not responded yet. So I thought I would ask here.

Thanks,
Richard Urban

As Dennis Lawrence pointed out, in order to properly analyze the results, you need to know the rationale for the selection of a sample size, and sampling error, which is called the Confidence Level. If, as he suggested, a sampling error of 5%, is expected, that means that you can expect that out of 100 samples conducted with the same parameters, the results of 95 samples will accurately reflect the universe. Conversely, of course, that means that 5 will be wrong. The sample size can be very small, if fact, at a certain point adding additional numbers to the sample will not add to the accuracy of the results. There are parameters for determining a proper sample size for a given universe. If fairly conducted, the sample will accurately reflect the actual universe (subject to the confidence level) with a pre-determined margin of error. So, if the margin of error is 2%, a sample that returns > a result that, for instance, shows that 65% of fans attending a baseball game are males, I can be 95% confident that, of the universe sampled, between 63% and 67% are male. Thus, if those statistics satisfy my need, I don’t have to do a 100% sample to find out what I want to know. When questions are used in a sample, it becomes much harder to have a fair sample. The question itself must be completely unbiased and not suggest the answer you would like. For instance, “General Lee was a great General, right?” is biased whereas, “Do you agree or disagree that General Lee was a great General” probably is not. That’s why it is important to know more than just the given results of a sample.> In my college auditing course, the professor gave us a universe of 0s with some Xs. He knew how may Xs were in the universe. We were then given different starting places in a random sampling table and used those numbers to find our sample and determine the number of Xs. As expected, 95% of the classes found the correct number of Xs, within the margin of error.Bob Graham> > _______________________________________________> > > > ------------------------------> > Message: 12> Date: Mon, 24 Mar 2008 19:34:36 -0400> From: "Tom Ryan" <pennmardel at mchsi.com>> Subject: GDG- Book review on Robert E.
