The remains were found in 1996. This is from the superintendant's 1997 annual report:
Human Remains
The Smithsonian Institution completed the analysis of the human remains recovered from the first day battlefield last year. The remains were verified as being from a battlefield burial of a soldier probably slain near the Railroad Cut where intense fighting took place on July 1, 1963. There was no conclusive evidence, however, regarding the soldier's identity. The remains were re-buried with full military honors in the Soldiers' National Cemetery on July 1, 1997, with the assistance of the 3d U.S. Infantry ("The Old Guard") from Arlington National Cemetery. A poignant highlight of the reburial was the personal attendance by two of the three still-living widows of Civil War veterans; one Union, the other Confederate.

When was the soldier in the RR cut found? Wasn't he found in the 1990s?
Thanks

Hi Mike,
You've asked an excellent question which has arisen inmost of our minds at one time or another. It occurred to me when in the 1950s some bones were found in the Eisenhower flower beds. The best reference I know of for the fate of the Confederate remains is Gregory Coco's book, "A Strange and Blighted Land" Keep tuned in to the GDG and someone else more knowledgeable than me will give you guidance.

I live in Gettysburg and I've read the many stories about the Confederate dead being disinterred after the battle and reburied down South at a later date. I often have visitors to my home ask me if there are corpses still out there on the field and don't have an answer for them. I just got done reading the Wert book on the third day of the battle and he mentions about how Garnett's body was not discovered and probably was buried in a mass grave somewhere. Have there been any statistics published showing how many of the deceased were reinterred or how many are presumed to still be on the field? Not to be morbid, but I've not heard a definitive answer to this question in the many Gettysburg books I've read.
Thanks,
Mike Brubaker
