GDG- George Sears Green

Greene was a career military officer. JLC not only went back into civilian life after the war (unwillingly; his Petersburg wounds made it impossible for him to remain in the military, which there is every indication he wanted to do). JLC was a trained public speaker, who, like many veterans, was drafted into politics. JLC after the war was very in demand on the lecture circuit. Of course, he centered on the exploits of the 20th Maine. In there was Pullen's later classic regimental history of the 20th Maine. Finally, I've always believed that Shaara picked JLC for "The Killer Angels" because JLC embodied the classic American ideal, the citizen-soldier who dropped civilian life when his country called and then returned to civilian life when the crisis ended in the model of the Roman farmer and general Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus (it was no accident that the postwar organization founded by Revolutionary War officers is the Society of the Cincinnati).

Regards,

Margaret
