Putting aside the propriety of their action, in light of their orders, the problem for both Sickles and Barlow was that they didn't have the manpower to cover the line they selected.? Barlow in particular stretched his line woefully thin, and stood?light on the artillery.?
Moreover, doesn't Ewell's failure to take Culp's Hill stem from, well, Ewell's failure, more than?any delaying action created by Barlow before?Barlow's division melted away?
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong (and I very well might be, as it's been some time since I've delved into Pfanz and the other great books on July 2, 1863) but if Sickles holds the position Meade expected him to hold on the afternoon of July 2, doesn't that put his left flank on LRT?? Or would LRT still stand exposed?
