John,
As a follow up to my earlier comment, I think it worth noting that a project
management study of Meade and Lee during the retreat and pursuit would find
that the reverse was true. As good a job that Meade did at Gettysburg in
comparison to Lee's poor performance, Meade seemed to overlook most tenets
of project management in the aftermath, while Lee rose to the occasion
remarkably well.
For a training program, it would make sense to point this out an an example
of the need for consistancy and tenaciousness in the face of adversity. I
think the retreat and pursuit would be an excellent follow-on program that
would demonstrate that success can be fleeting unless the project manager
has a clear concept of the big picture, and is willing to take sufficient
risk to accomplish the mission.
I mention this with some trepidation, since I know there are folks who are
very sensitive about this issue. Nonetheless, I trust it will be accepted
in the spirit it is intended.
