I agree with Margaret - When I go to Manassas, or anywhere west of DC, I take the turnpike to 15 from Philly. It might be a little bit longer in terms of time, but so much LESS stress and if you add some time to meander - you can find some interesting historical markers and historic sites to stop and visit.
There are lots of off the beaten path stops around Gettysburg also. Take old 15 - see how life was before they built 15 around towns. Don't forget to go north of Gettysburg and visit Dillsburg - in the fall they have a great Farm festival in town. Almost every time I go to Gettysburg, I make it a point of finding those out of the way interesting sites.
