I've read elsewhere that, after his death, Lee's family and supporters edited any letters that were published in order to eliminate anything that interfered with the Lee as saint image and did not indicate that the letters had been edited. It wasn't that there was anything truly awful in the omitted portions of the letters, just anything that indicated the existence of a complex human being and not a living saint.
