Professor Redd:
Were I to be so bold as to try, how does one apply to take the 2008 exam? I have been conducting a rather intensive self-study program since the fall of 2006 so as to attain a semblance of competence in order to teach non-credit courses on Gettysburg at the local community college (my next 3-session course begins in 3 weeks). I have all the materials you and others have mentioned, so I can certainly step up the intensity a few more notches.

I agree with Charles Kann's assessment. In preparing for the 2006 exam I read (among other things) and found most helpful 'Brigades of Gettysburg' (Gottfried) and 'Generals of Gettysburg' (Tagg).
I made flashcards from the books and finally after years of reading Coddington, Sears, Trudeau and many others, the content, flow and progress of the battle became more focused and 'memorable.'
Also, in preparing for the 2008 exam, I am relying on Charles Kann's wwwsite on the monuments, which was the most difficult part of the test for me: twenty b/w, photocopied monument pictures with the monuments' text digitally erased.
