<<What would he be like to sit around a card table or chew the fat with? He
just seems too sainty to me. What was he really like?>>

Joe,

You may want to get hold of the book "Reading the Man" A Portrait of Robert
E. Lee Through his Private Letters," since it provides a more detailed
personality study of Lee than previous biographies. According to the
author, Elizabeth Brown Pryor, Lee did not enjoy sitting around chewing the
fat with the guys, but apparently never missed a chance to chat up the
ladies, especially the young and pretty ones.

This is the best all around study of Lee that I have read. The author had
access to a lot of new material, and had cooperation of the Lee descendants.
