" Passed through Chester Gap over the blue ridge very pleasant and cloudy reached Front Royal about 200 pm where, Jackson whipped Banks so badly just heard that Ewell has whipped Milroy at Wincester and captured his whole force crossed the Shenandoah both branches late at night dark rainy & cold marched 3 miles and halted until morning."
