Russ, now that the trees have been cleared you can get to the G.W. Weikert house. It's on a knoll, and most of the foundation is still there. A rough approximation of its location would be straight out (roughly south)from where Brooke Avenue makes a sharp right turn and then runs along the monuments. Or you can walk down (roughly west) through the triangular field and up the slope toward the cleared land of the Rose farm. Sorry I can't be more apecific than that. Wonder if any of our esteemed members have GPSed it.
I live here now, but when we used to visit here we often stayed at the Eisenhower Hotel, about 5 miles south on business 15. Great indoor pool with a retractable dome. If you want something more friendly, try the Doubleday Inn on Doubleday Avenue. Great place, nice people, a friendly dog, and you can walk right out to the field on both sides.
There are no remains of McAllister's mill; floods have removed all vestiges of the site. If you enter the park road (Colgrove?) off Baltimore Street and go 1/4-1/2 mile, there is an area on the right where you can pull off. The former site is down to Rock Creek on the right, but there's no trail.
We welcome your questions and eventual visit.

Subject: GDG- Lurker coming out...
Esteemed GDG Member Contributes:
All,
It has taken me a few years to finally come out of the lurker closet but I
couldn't keep away anymore. I enjoy reading the GDG digests every day as
much my morning newspaper. I would like to thank all of the contributors
who, through their continued postings, have expanded my knowledge of the
Gettysburg Battlefield and surrounding area tremendously. I usually make
several trips a year to the 'burg from central NJ and will be heading out
there again in a few weeks on the anniversary to take in some of the
extended Ranger presentations as well as going off on my own to research
some of my own battlefield interests. I have loads of questions and could go
on for quite a while but I will try to restrain myself for this first post.
Here goes...
In addition to the researching the history of the events that took place on
the battlefield in 1863 I thoroughly enjoy the history of the field itself,
post 1863. One of the books that has provided me with some very interesting
post battle information is "This is Holy Ground" by Barbara Platt. Is anyone
aware of any published works detailing the history of the battlefield and
its development? I think I am going to pick up Greg Coco's book "A Strange
and Blighted Land" when I am in Gettysburg on my next trip as this looks
like it has some interesting content.
Is there anything remaining of McAllister's Dam on Rock creek? I have seen
several photos from the Tipton plates but haven't gone to see if anything
there primarily because 1) although I can reference McAllisters Mill from
period maps I do not know the exact location of where the dam should be
since I don't have any maps that show the dam itself. I see that there is
also a sawmill south of the mill so the dam could be anywhere in between. 2)
I don't know who owns the property when the dam was or is and don't need any
trespassing issues.
After seeing the posts this morning and reading the article in the Morning
Sun I am interested in going on the church tour when I come in town at some
point this year. Also, there were all of the good comments posted by the
people who took the tour during this year's muster. Does anyone know where
to go to take the tour offered by the town?
A few years ago in the fall I walked the route taken by Hood's Division on
the afternoon of the 2nd from their step off point to the base of Houck's
Ridge. While walking I tried to locate the remains of the Timbers farmhouse
south of the Rose Woods. I was using the directions provided in Jorgensen's
"Wheatfield Walking Tour" book but could not locate the foundation. Is it
still there? I was a little thrown off because they had just started
clearing the NPS woods to the east of where I thought the foundation should
have been but I could have been totally off in my location. I am going to
try to find this again when I am out there in July. Any help?
On last question (for now)-I usually stay at the Battlefield Quality Inn
because of its proximity to the 3rd days fight field and the old visitors
center. Anyone else have any favorite hotel recommendations? I have stayed
at a few other hotels in years past. Some were good, some were a mistake,
like the old Travel Lodge. If anybody has any suggestions please feel free
to throw them out there.
Once again thanks for everyone's great outpouring of knowledge. There is no
other site quite like this one and the quality of the posters is excellent.
I look forward to reading any replies. Maybe one day I will actually not be
working for the Stomp or Muster and get to meet some of you in person.
Regards,
Russell Corleto
