Esteemed GDG Member Contributes:
Am not one to complain much, but after seeing an ad for the Gettysburg Arts
Festival, which will take place from June 19th to the 29th, in the Arts and
Leisure section of the NY Times today, I had to say something.
The photo that accompanies the announcement of the festival is so wrong for
so many reasons. It is a photo of Warren's Monument on LRT. With an added
addition to the monument. Someone got the "bright" idea to draw folks to the
festival, by placing a sax on his statue dangling behind his back. No
monument or statue at the park should be exploited in this way, and I am hoping the
NPS had no clue that a photo such as this would be taken. It's a disgrace
and really bothered me today. Have your arts festival, but have some taste as
well, as those who found themselves fighting for their lives on LRT 145 years
ago were doing so to save this nation. If the NPS did know that a photo
like this would be included in a print ad campaign, well they should be ashamed
of themselves.
Am sure some will say lighten up Steve, but in a case like this I will not.
Many other ways to entice folks to come to Gettysburg for their festival,
and this ad just shows poor taste and bad judgment. The battlefield at
Gettysburg is sacred ground, and to see it exploited this way for a freaking
festival makes me ill.
Regards from the Garden State,
Steve Basic
