Hi Dick -
Bigelow noted that he mentioned the Confederate sharpshooter problem to
McGilvery when he asked to retire by prolong. But that was /relatively/
late in the process. When Kershaw won the Stony Hill area at first, and
the 2nd SC & parts of the 3rd SC (btn) came towards that direction
(after getting blasted by the Union artillery along the Wheatfield
Road), those troops /did/ start sniping at Bigelow. Bigelow noted he
used some cannister against them. I don't recall offhand how badly
Bigelow was affected initially by them, and certainly its hard to figure
it out time-wise due to the chaos that was going on. Certainly the
Confederates once they were in the thumb near the Stony Hill would have
been in (longish?) range - it's a matter of how much they were kept back
by the Union troops in the woods north of the Wheatfield Road.
