Harper's Ferry where you can take your kids wading in the Potomac river is always a fun place to visit. At Harper's Ferry there's a national park that commemorates the national armory, John Brown's raid, and it's capture by Stonewall's troops in September 1862. Outside the park is a really terrible wax museun. I haven't seen it since 1999 so it may have folded. It was so bad that it was funny. If you're ambitious you might consider taking them on a day hike from Antietam to Harper's Ferrry tracing the route that A. P. Hill's light division took. Hill's troop made the journey in about 7 hours carrying their guns and ammo while traveling over some badly rutted dirtr roads. The roads are better now without too much traffic and you won't have to wade across the Potomac at Boteler's Ford (also known as Blackford' Ford) as there is a bridge( new James Rumsey Bridge located almost on top of the old ford's location) with an 8 foot sidewalk for pedestrians. Shepherdstown is a
quaint old town that's very well maintained to attract tourists and Boteler' Ford about a mile downstream from town was the scene of a nasty little ANV rear guard skirmish with units of the 5th Corps AoP on September 19-20 as Lee was pulling back into northern Virginia. As I recollect there are the graves of about 250 ANV soldiers in Shepherdstown who died in the Maryland campaign.

Hi all
I am holding a week-long civil war camping trip for middle school
students this month. We're spending Monday to Wednesday in the Antietam
area and then we'll be at Gettysburg from Wednesday evening to Friday
afternoon. I'm looking for advice on two diversions: 1) interesting
historical sites in either area not necessarily related to the battles,
but still very interesting for students and 2) just plain fun stuff -
miniature golf, etc, that might be in the area. Especially nice in this
regard would be a public pool or swimming area that included showers!
This is the first time I've organized something like this. I'm hoping
it expands and becomes a yearly event - I may add on a trip to the
southern/western theater next year.

Thanks.
