GDG- VC: How much time to allocate? Plus bookstores?

I visited the vc a couple of weeks ago and was impressed with the building.  However, was extremely depressed when I toured the new bookstore.  This was the first time in my many battlefield visits which I did not purchase any books.  Maybe I'm incorrect, but I didn't find any selection there that couldn't be already purchased in one of the large chain book purveyors.  It appeared that the majority of merchandise in the store was sovenoir related.
