I attended the renaming of Norristown Courthouse Square to the General Winfield Scott Hancock Square in Norristown, Pa today. Hancock was born in Montgomery Square (actually close enough that I can walk it from my house), grew up in Norristown and is buried in Montgomery Cemetery. The “Courthouse Square” had been part of the original town of Norris and was deemed to be an “open square forever”. Today, the square’s center holds a tall obelisk dedicated to Civil War veterans.

One of Hancock’s biographers, David Jordon, spoke on Hancock’s life. He reminded us of exactly why “Hancock the Superb”, deserved this honor. On hand were various Civil War reenactors, the Historical Society of Montgomery County Board members (yours truly being a member), the Hancock Society and other Hancock admirers.

I ran into GDGer Don Ernsberger there also representing the 69th Pa.
