Although Colonel Strong Vincent was promoted on the field, Colonel John McLane was not. McLane was killed at Gaines Mills and remained a colonel for nearly a century. This is from GM School District's own site:

"Though General McLane High School was erected in 1960, McLane was at that time still a colonel. The title of general posthumously conferred upon him April 4,1961, when the General Assembly of the State Legislature promoted to brigadier general.

"Information for this article was taken from the essay "Colonel (Brigadier General) John W. McLane" by Dr. Roy P. Stonesifer Jr. of Edinboro University; Erie...A History, written and published by Herbert R. Spencer; History of Erie County, The Erie Dispatch and The Pittsburgh Dispatch.*This article was copied from the Brown-Thompson Edinboro Independent.*"
Also, although the 83d PVI was seeded by McLane's original Erie unit, it drew companies from neighboring counties Crawford and Forest as well as more distant locations:

83rd Pennsylvania Volunteers
- Company A - Titusville, Crawford County
- Company B - Meadville, Crawford County
- Company C - Erie
- Company D - Edinboro, Erie County
- Company E - Waterford, Erie County
- Company F - Meadville, Crawford County
- Company G - Tionesta, Forest County
- Company G* - Allegheny County
- Company H - Conneautville, Crawford County
- Company H* - Pittsburg
- Company I - Erie, Erie County
- Company I* - Harrisburg and Reading
- Company K - Erie, Erie County
- Company K* - Dauphin County
BTW the 83d suffered the second-highest casualties of any Union regiment, and always, as its regimental history says, facing forward.
