Hi,

If it were a II Corps officer in Webb's Philadelphia Brigade, he would be 
wearing his insignia of rank, per the orders of General Webb. This caused no 
small amount of grumbling from the veteran officers whom knew that the 
insignia marked them for enemy sharpshooters (Webb had served most of his 
time as a staff officer).
I'm not so sure that the episode ever happened as related, since it was 
written so long after the war (about 50 years).
