Greg Coco's book "A Strange and Blighted Land" is good on this. Locals & visitors collected a lot (self-help reimbursements for the locals plus souvenir hunting) until the Provost Marshal's men cracked down after posting notices that all US & CSA military equpment, arms, etc was US property

After the battle with all of the muskets, wagons, cannon shells etc. left on the field, who cleaned it up? Did certain federal regiments remain behind to gather up all of the items?
