Les:
I finally managed to find my notes, and they do say "Jay or Williams"
(per Pfanz). Five years after the tour, I'm just glad I remembered the
first one! Thanks for the heads up.
If I find the pertinent map or can get another copy of it, I'll upload
it and post the link next week.
With my compliments,
Zack F.
Zack,
Thank you for looking.
Here's the reason I asked for your source: I own a Civil War art gallery in Gettysburg, and it affords me the great joy of being able to talk about the battle not only to customers, but also to a number of LBGs and people who have a much deeper knowledge than I possess. Last year I acquired a copy of Dale Gallon's "What are Your Orders?", which portrays Vincent's meeting with the courier close by the Wheatfield. (The location is not an issue here.) Shortly thereafter I was talking with one of the folks who did the historical research on the print for Mr. Gallon. This gentleman is a very highly-regarded scholar and I asked him who the courier was. He told me that, despite spending a good deal of time looking, he and his fellows had not been able to find a single piece of documentation that identified him. Although they had an idea on who it COULD be, since they were unable to identify him with any certainty, they didn't name him in the print documentation. Naturally, that piqued my interest, and I've been poking around myself ever since, in a sort of casual, futile way. So when I saw your post, I was hoping that you had been able to come up with a source that would answer the question.
I appreciate the time you spent tracking your notes down. I will look forward to hearing what the LBG you gave the tour with has to say, since you said his opinion was very firm that it was Jay. I'll be interested to know what his source is.
I'm reading your article tonight...
Respectfully yours,
Les
