July 1. "Continued our march towards Gettysburg. on reaching the top of a mountain, we were hurried up very much and could hear plainly fighting in front of us. Our cannoneers mounted and we bagan a trot-march, which was kept up until we reached the battlefield just west of Gettysburg. The Yanks had been driven beyond the town. Passed over a portion of the battlefield where the dead of both sides lay very thick and from which the Yankee wounded had not been moved. We encamped on the high hill west of the town."
