A very good read is The Rebel Yell & The Yankee Hurrah, the Civil War Journal
of a Maine Volunteer,by private John W.Hale, 17th Maine Regiment.It follows
him from the time he joins up at Camp King,Cape Elizabeth,Maine, August
1862,until he is mustered out in June 1865.If you don't already have it,I think
you can still find a copy. The one I have is 1985 copyright & I found it with
Barnes & Nobel in their used books.I found it very interesting as its from a
privates view, which is altogether different from a generals.

Yes, a quite enjoyable and informative read.
