Have you seen the regimental history of the 17th? It is a good  read.
Red Diamond Regiment: The 17th Maine Infantry,  1862-1865  by William Jordan
Also, specific to Gettysburg: Gettysburg: The  Second Day by Pfanz is a 
detailed classic.
and Gettysburg's Bloody Wheatfield by Jay Jorgensen is a  micro history 
prominently featuring the 17th Me.
