>From the diary of Chaplin Francis Kennedy:

"Left our camp in the mountainside and marched toward Gettysburg. Passed Graffenburg Spring, Cashtown and New Salem. When we reached the last named place we could hear the sound of battle. Cannonading and musketry. In the course of a few miles we came in sight of the battle, and from a commanding position, I for the first time saw a battle in actual process. Our Division was at once formed in the line of battle and advanced. Only two brigades of Pender's Division became engaged during today---Scales and McGowan's---and they suffered severly. Heth's Division first encountered the enemy. and bore the brunt of the fight. so far as our part of the field was concerned. Our reg't had six or eight men wounded, two of them severly. We have driven the enemy several miles and the city of Gettysburg which was stoutly defended by the enemy is occupied tonight by Rhodes Division of Ewell's Corps."
