<<Assuming you get to the promised land and have one opportunity to have
a day-long conversation with one of the following, who would you choose
to converse with? Coddington, Foote, or Bachelder?>>
Phil, as interesting as it would be to talk with any of these three, my
first and second priorities still would be Col. George Sharpe of the BMI who
would have a pretty good idea of what intelligence was available to Hooker
and Meade that they did not use during the Gettysburg Campaign, and
Confederate Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin, because he was in charge
of the Secret Service and knew about all of the clandestine activities of
the Davis administration.
Forced to choose among the three you named, Foote would probably be my last
choice because, notwitstanding his writing ability, he came across as a sort
of a curmudgeon. Between the other two, I would have to go with Bachelder
primarily because he lived during the time period, and knew just about
everyone of importance related to the battle or at least had contact by mail
with many of them.
