Tom,
One of the best regimentals ever published was done so by Rufus Dawes,
Colonel 6th Wisconsin, Brevet Brigadier General U.S. Volunteers, i.e., Service With
the Sixth Wisconsin Volunteers, 1890, reprinted by Morningside in 1985.
If anyone wants to read about that regiments engagement at GB and the RR Cut
July 1 they need not look any further. Don't, however, look for notes.
Considered one of the early classics Dawes' work has been regarded by many trusted
historians and scholars as the work of all works concerning that regiments
engagement throughout the war, yet it is not noted or sourced. I have seen many
recent works by the best that indeed footnote Dawns' UN-noted work and not his
personal journal or recorded recollections. I cannot think of a better
shortcut of an undocumented published book.
Rufus Dawes' CW journal and private papers are now available to the public
but what's the point. His trustworthiness and personal recollection over some
25-years was and has never been challenged, unlike that of Alexander's. Yes, I
agree, sort cuts are OK if, as suggested, one considers the source.
As thorough as Richard Rollins was with his research I would never use his
GBM article titled "Pickett's Charge the Third Wave" as a shortcut. He and I,
and many others, debated that work for months till I realized all opinions save
his were not regarded ... which was fine. Problem with that work, in my
opinion, to much Rollins and not enough first or second hand accounts and or
opinions. Not even a shortcut or two. The entire article is based on nothing more
then the good professors personal opinion. To Richard's dismay many of his
colleagues and scholars tore the article apart. Mind you, that does not detract from
the more note worthy works from the good doctor. Without doubt when I think
of Gettysburg and sourcing, Rollins was first rate.
Dave
