The difference between writers (like Foote and Catton) and writers who are
also academically-minded historians is _attention to detail_--quite similar
to the posters on the forum who miss the little _detail_ of editing down
their posts and eliminating lines of unnecessary text that make digests
longer than necessary. It only take a few minutes to document and
fact-check properly and use the delete key properly.
I read Foote and Catton's books once and realized that to really get the
flavor of the times, I needed to read primary source material--i.e., the
stuff that a good writer/historian does footnote or endnote--and actually
visit the battlefield and camp sites.
Foote does get credit for lots of interesting, simple maps that show major
troop movements.
