In the back of each of Shelby Foote's 3 volumes he was a "bibliographical note" that list the books that he used in writing that volume.  In his first volume he states that he will include a full bibliography in volume 3.  Maybe after 20 years of writing he decided a bibliography was not really necessary for his 3 volume narrative.
 
Great footnotes like those found in Coddington and Freeman really make the reading experience outstanding.
