On a trip to NYC in the late 80's I met Foote at Laquardia.  Having just finished his trilogy, I enthusiastically complemented him on how much I enjoyed his book.  Years later I saw an interview with him on cpan.  To my embarrassment, he mentioned that he distains people who come up to him and complement him on his work.  Go figure.
