One only has to read Hancock's memoirs of Gettysburg to understand Bingham
and Morgan were both grand at spinning the truth about incidents and issues as
well making mistakes on many.
You can actually follow Bingham's follies quite clearly in the Bachelder
Papers whereas Hancock either denies many incidents are simply states he did not
remember, he forgot, or he understood it to be. Contact Bingham because he
relayed them to him. Great case in point that comes to mind is Bingham's mistake
concerning the 5th U.C. Batt C (Wier),19th Maine and 4th U.S. Batt K
(Selley/James) July 2. The second is the Hancock/McGilvery issue July 3rd and of
course the Hunt/Hancock incident the same day.
To much detail to elaborate but for what it's worth Hunt assumed full
responsibility later in life for making the mistake of asking Bingham (happened upon
him after leaving CH) to silence the batteries north of the Copse of Trees
while he handle those to the South.
