GDG- Is this good ground?

This doesn't help help your situation at all, but your meeting Grants great granddaughter made me think of a VERY interesting encounter I had during Remembrance Day.
I was standing at the Indiana monument in Spangler's Spring and a gentleman came up to me, asking if I was familiar with Gettysburg and the monuments. I told him I knew some of them, but not familiar with most of them. He asked if I knew where the monument for Ewell was located, as he was the great grandson of Ewell and was told there was a monument on the battlefield for Ewell. I told him the only one I could think of was his headquarters' cannon and how to get to that.
I just found it interesting to talk with this gentleman for a while and to actually meet a decendent of someone whose name we all discuss.
However: we couldn't talk long because he had to chase after some children. He was hiking with a what appeared to be several families who had some smaller children (not sure if any were his or not, but he couldn't talk long).
Thanks
Andy

I was hoping that someone could reinvent Gettysburg for me.
After twenty years of research, the results inevitably are the same.
Is there a new website that cuts through the old battlefields of literary license?
I fear I have been in a loop that is going over old material.
Should I re-enact with the 118th NY?
Should I sponsor a monument at Antietam?
Ive met Grants great grandaughter, lunched with Pat Falci(AP HILL) and given a speech to the civil war dead at Greenwood Cemetary on youtube-Search_ Dr. Daniel Ayres jr.!
Please help me with my current dilemna!

Is this anyone in this forum who is a subject
matter expert on either of the artists Edwin
Forbes or Alfred Waud and their work during the

If so, I would like to ask you a couple questions

Happy Birthday General Meade! Lisa Malandra & I conducted a tour of Laurel Hill Cemetery last September. It was mostly a Civil War tour, but we included a few other notables, the Godey's, Sarah Hale, businessmen, scoundrels, scholars, spiritualists & businessmen. We indeed had a champagne toast at Meade's grave. If anyone wants to see some photos, drop me an email!
While on the topic of "death" there are two new books out that I highly recommend, THIS REPUBLIC IS SUFFERING and BURYING THE DEAD BUT NOT THE PAST.
Also out, Mark Twain's Civil War, Sherman's Forgotten General: Slocum, and The Irish General: Meagher. Ahh, so many books, so little reading time!
Cheers & Happy New Year!

I'm delighted to say that my copy of Joe Bilby's new "Small Arms at
Gettysburg: Infantry and Cavalry Weapons in America's Greatest Battle" arrived in the
mail today (a complimentary copy from Joe -- I believe it will be on store
shelves and in Internet bookstores in the very near future). I have read most
of it already in draft form, so I can say without hesitation that this is a
volume that belongs on the bookshelf of anyone seriously interested in the
nature of the fighting at Gettysburg, covering the types of small arms used,
their histories, and the way they were used.

Thanks for cutting to the chase by illuminating that the LBG V. NPS dust up is one of tax reporting instead of principle. Any American would respond similarly if a third party endangered their ability to under report taxable income. This is even more serious than the State's Rights disagreement which caused a little unpleasantness in the middle of the 19th Century.

Hi Tom! General Meade's alter ego Andy Waskie was there, but General Meade stayed below ground today! It was a beautiful day and if anyone is in the Philly area, check out Channel 10 (NBC), today, as they were there filming. Don't know if it will make the cut, but they were there.
BTW, it is also the General and Mrs. Meade's wedding anniversary.
I took photos also, but couldn't get near Meade's grave(I have lots of other photos of his grave from past celebrations) - there were well over 300 folks there. There was also a ceremony to dedicate plaques to mark the graves of a father and son who served in the war, but were in unmarked graves. They served in the 81st Pa.
I did manage to sneak off to take a photo of one of Eric Wittenburg's and mine favorite 6th Pa Cav hero, Frank Furness.

Robert,
There is no reason to apologize as there was no implication of tax evasion by
anyone, at least in my view. You are gracious.
With that said there is no reason for any guide to feel disturbed if all
Federal and State tax laws are adhered to including claiming all cash transitions
and gratuities. I know a few nameless friends over the years who have not ...
none of my business. Strange twist of events, strange conversation. Whatever
the decision I personally hope the guides prevail. Like John said, "Let's get
back to discussing the battle."
Happy New Year!

The stomp was great. In the morning, Keith Mackenzie had arranged for a tour with LBG Wayne Wachsmuth. About 12-15 people attended this tour. We covered the July 2 action of Carr and Brewster's brigades from their positions along the Emmitsburg Road back to where they rallied and participated in the eventual repulse of the charge of the brigades of Barksdale, Wilcox, Lang and Wright. We noted placements of several AOP artillery batteries brought out to stem the advancing tide, and the capture and subsequent recapture of many guns. We discussed the probable locations and assault paths of both the 1st MN and Willard's brigade, as well as the actions of additional support troops and batteries that moved out to face the advance. Wayne gave an excellent and informative presentation.
In the afternoon, about 20 people joined Chuck Teague on East Confederate Avenue next to the Kefauver school. Chuck made a presentation about the famed "Harvest of Death" photographs made on July 6 by O'Sullivan and Gardner, and described a theory that these pictures may have been taken in this area. Using maps and blown-up photographs, as well as some pictures from private collections, Chuck made a good case for these dead soldiers to have come from the advance lines of the 33rd MA, 41st NY or 153rd PA, who moved east from the base of East Cemetery Hill and made first contact with the advancing brigades of Hays and Avery on the evening of July 2. As the afternoon grew colder and the skies more threatening, we moved to Steven's Knoll to view the area from that angle. Again, using photographs and prints from sketches made for the weekly magazines of the time, Chuck demonstrated that the theory is indeed plausible.
We got to see for the first time faces behind the userids on the GDG discussion boards, and all had a great time. If we only had about 5 more degrees of temperature or 5 mph less winds, it would have been more comfortable. By the end of the tour, I think it's safe to say we all looked forward to something hot. I personally have no information on pre- or post-stomp activities, but perhaps some of our colleagues may be able to provide that.
All in all, it was a cold Stomp, but well worth it!
JC

Friday, January 1, 1841.
Springfield, IL.
On this "fatal first of Jan. '41," Lincoln passes through an emotional
crisis, the exact nature of which is unknown. One story is that he failed
to appear at his own wedding; but more probably he broke his engagement
with Mary Todd . Whatever the occurrence, result was acute mental anguish.
