I'll try to answer the two questions regarding Abner at Gettysburg. First, let me explain my use of his first name -- Abner Doubleday's two brothers also served in the AOP, so in my book I use their first names so the reader will know which Doubleday I'm talking about.
Next - Abner - Newton - Meade. Abner, of course, knew John Newton, they were classmates at West Point. When the first day's fighting had ended, Abner was returned to his command, and Newton was elevated to the slot left open by the death of Reynolds. Abner, as a good soldier, chose not to "make waves" under the nose of the enemy. However, once the enemy left the field, Abner inquired as to when Newton received his rank, and discovered that Newton was indeed his junior. I have some very interesting correspondence regarding this situation that is in my book. I'd love to tell you, but I'm not sure I should so for now I will ask you to wait until my book comes out. Gettysburg was Abner's last Civil War battle. He remained in the Army for another 10 years, but did not pick up the rifle, as they say.He did not go quietly following the three days at Gettysburg.
Hope that helps a little. The Army of the Potomac was truly the Army of the Political! From what I hear, it's somewhat like that today.
Best, JoAnn
