GDG- Doubleday at Gettysburg

Well JoAnn, maybe you can give us a clue on what is involved in the two questions here.

First, Ab's replacement as temporary 1st Corps commander. On the face of it, Newton may have been the best choice. There were only four available infantry Major Generals with the AoP, and the politicoes Schurz and Birney were out of the question, so Newton instead of Doubleay doesn't seem so outrageous. But do we know anything of Ab's reaction? Any evidence whether he went along with Meade's decision or not?

Second, Ab's sacking less than a week after the battle. In later testtimony before the Joint Committee, He attributed it to his being the lonely Republican in the Democratic AoP officer corps (which seems a weak arguement in the face of the continuing service of Schurz, Birney, Wadsworth, and Geary). Do we know anything of his Republicanism? Was he a Seward man? An independant? What was his relationship with Wadsworth, whom some consider the party's amn at AoP hq? I think it more likely his days were numbbered in the AoP once Meade got command. GGM was not the man to forget how the Pa Reserves were hung out to dry during the assault at Fredricksburg.

Without endangering potenitial sales, any insights here?

Hello,
I can't resist this topic - Doubleday is the subject of my new book coming out this year - a bio of him to be exact.
Doubleday was an excellent commander at Gettysburg, but never got the credit for it. I can't give away all the interesting stuff I've found, but there was no love lost between Doubleday and Meade and it had nothing to do with military action in general.
As far as the old 48 Hours Doubleday - that is a case of 19th Century humor
Guess what? If you double your day, you get 48 hours!!!
  Best to all, JoAnn
