In Stuart's favor in the postwar search for a scapegoat for the Union victory, there was also the fact that he was a Virginian and had an articulate and formidable advocate in the person of John Singleton Mosby who was every bit a match for Early & Co. One thing in favor of the postwar reputations of anyone who died during the war was that it meant that they couldn't do anything after the war to incur the wrath of the Lost Causers. One will never know, for instance, how Stonewall Jackson, who saw the will of God in everything, would have reacted to defeat. It certainly would have been interesting if, having survived the war, he would have decided that defeat was God's judgment on the cause and gone even farther than Longstreet in accepting Reconstruction. As I said, one will never know, but, it's at least a possibility.

Regards,

Margaret
