recently noted, had a pretty clear grasp of what was going on, except in the 
mind of DES.  But Wilcox found Yankee infantry where none were supposed to 
be, and did anyone sit up and take notice?  I've never seen an acceptable 
explanation of why not.  My own feeling is that if Wilcox reported his 
discoverey, it got lost in the Anderson-Hill black hole of Pennsylvania.  >>

In all fairness to Wilcox, Anderson, and even Hill, it's entirely possible 
the Pitzer's Woods skirmish simply wasn't seen as all that big a deal.  And 
despite the legend which has grown up around the fight - in some respects, a 
by-product of the myth that it delayed Longstreet getting to LRT just 
enought to save the day - Wilcox's men actually did run Berdan off in fairly 
short order.  The whole episode may have been writtten off as a local foray, 
which it pretty much was, and of no great import once driven off.
