GDG- RE: This past Saturday at Gettysburg

Of course, even in 1863, Gettysburg was much more heavily populated and near even more heavily populated areas than either Wilson's Creek or Pea Ridge were. Gettysburg was a county seat, less than 50 miles from the state capital of Pennsylvania, at a major intersection of roads, and on a railroad line. It also was, once the Confederates departed, the only one of the three that was in assuredly friendly Union territory. Although Arkansas officially joined the rebellion and Missouri did not, both states werebitterly split and in conditions of virtual anarchy during the Civil War. Vicksburg, once it fell, was still very hostile. Gettysburg, on the other hand, was not only the first clear cut Union victory but in a loyal state and easily accessible. Between people seeking loved ones and tourists, Gettysburg was very popular very early.

Margaret
