Thanks for your note, Ron (pasted below), and for
reading the history of the First New Jersey Brigade. 
They didn't do much at Gettysburg, and the men always
regretted not having a bigger part of its history. 
They made up for it on other battlefields, however.

Good question about the number of officers at the
start of the war.  Here is my best shot:
Each of the ten companies had one captain, one first
lieutenant and one second lieutenant.  That makes 30. 
For the other eight slots, you have the commanding
officer (usually a colonel), lieutenant colonel,
major, surgeon (usually a major), and the remaining
positions (adjutant, quartermaster, assistant surgeon,
and chaplain) could be a lieutenant or higher).
