The "2 guide positions" are GS-5 park guides that are authorized in the
park, but not funded for a few years. They are pretty much a basic park
ranger position with more limited duties- information desk and presenting
programs that have already been developed (National Cemetery walk, the Third
Day walk). The park guide position generally does not have promotion
potential beyond GS-5. Park Rangers, on the other hand, have a progressive
scale to full performance at GS-9. A GS-9 ranger is expected to
independently develop and present interpretive programs of a complex nature,
such as the battlewalks, education programs, etc.
