Me thinks the only reason Mr Bearss hasn't been included in the criticism  on 
lack of footnotes, is that he can still show up at your front door and carve  
'Semper Fi, in your forehead :-)

With all  the discussion on whether it is good to include footnotes or not,  
I  
did a little browse through my library to see who may not have used   
footnotes.  Others who didn't use footnotes were American Heritage in  their  
The Civil 
War, which many of us cut our Civil War teeth on,  Douglas Southall  Freeman 
in Lee's Lieutenants, Edward Bearss in  Fields of Honor, and Carl  Sandburg 
in 
his epic biography on Lincoln,  which I believe won the Pulitzer  Prize for 
history.  At least  there were none in any of those editions which  I have.
