Hello,

         There is a distinction that needs to be made between the academic 
writing and popular writing here. Editors/publishers of popular histories 
hate footnotes.  Many writers will have a difficult time getting them 
included.  Editors of scholarly history demand foot notes and you cannot 
publish without them.

Different audiences, purposes and needs.
