_Team of Rivals_ is a good example of narrative history which is heavily footnoted. I am actually getting used to publishers who hate miniature numbers on a page and intead use page number and short quotes in the back for those who want to check up on something.

A whole lot better than the numbered endnotes where the top of the endnote page says only that they are for chapter III. Who knows what chapter number you are reading?

"Problems will always torment us because all important problems are insoluble: that is why they are important. The good comes from the continuing struggle to try and solve them, not from the vain hope of their solution."

- Historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr.
