If you can track down a 2-disc DVD set of the Russell Crowe nautical film  
"Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World", there is an interesting  
featurette in the Special Features section dealing with the recording of cannon  
sounds from different locations, done with the participation of an American  
Civil War reenactment artillery unit.  The sound varied greatly depending  upon 
where the microphone was set.
