GDG- Shelby Foote

Mark,
I'm sorry if I didn't make myself clear. Obviously anyone can write a book
without footnotes, and people are welcome to buy and read it. What some
seemed to suggest was that narrative histories are in some special category
and therefore exempted from scholarly expectations to document their
sources. I can think of no reason that narrative histories are less well
served by including footnotes. In my opinion, Foote wrote a marvelous
account of the CW, which is weakened by the lack of citations.

best,
Marc

I didn't interpret it that way, I was exaggerating to make the point.
If someone wants to publish it and someone wants to buy it, that is how
they "get away" with writing books without footnotes.

Mark,
How did you interpret my short post as advocating government oversight
in
the publishing of history books?

best,
Marc
